Save all your materials & bag them into the following categories:
1 - HARD/RIGID PLASTICS
Acceptable Materials
- Rigid plastic packaging from consumer goods (e.g. electronics, tools), food (e.g. salads, baked goods), empty CD/DVD/VHS protective cases
- Rigid plastic containers, including milk jugs, yogurt and margarine containers, shampoo/liquid soap bottles, cleaning product containers, pill/vitamin bottles, clean plant pots
- Other specialty plastics such as wire & cable insulation, panelling, large buckets, recycling bins, garden hoses (remove metal ends), clean compost bins, cleaning brushes, toothbrushes, plates, cutlery, utensils, desk trays & rulers, pipes & fittings, floor mats, ice scrapers, license plate frames, plastic window frames, traffic cones, garbage cans & lids, & light switch plates.
2 - SOFT PLASTICS
Acceptable Materials
Plastic bags (remove handles, receipts)
- Shopping and grocery bags
- Clean food storage bags
- Dry cleaning and newspaper bags
- Cereal/chip/cracker bags (non foil-lined)
Plastic wrap (remove stickers, labels)
- Shrink and bubble wrap
- Over wrap (stretchable)
- polyethylene foam (twistable)
Items Not Accepted
- Soiled items (food, dirt, paint)
- Tarpaulins, dirty construction poly
- Cellophane
- Foil lined bags (accepted separately in its own category)
- Biodegradable, compostable bags (accepted up to 5% maximum volume per bag full)
Helpful Hints
- Cellophane is identifiable by its crinkly and non-stretch characteristics
- Labels and stickers should be cut out of film, allowing the rest of the material to be recycled
3 - POLYSTYRENE FOAM PACKING BLOCKS - example
Clean polystyrene packing blocks coded , used to pack around breakable or electronic equipment.
4 - POLYSTYRENE FOAM PACKING PEANUTS Typically used to pack breakable equipment, etc.
5 - STYROFOAM INSULATION - example
Developed more than 50 years ago by Dow Industries, this product comes in a light blue,pink, or green color, and is the most widely used insulation in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
6 - "DAIRY" GABLE TOP CARTONS
Examples:
- Skim, 1%, 2%, Homogenized
- Half & Half cream
- Coffee Cream
- Chocolate Milk
Note: Must be rinsed.
7 - "NON-DAIRY" GABLE TOP CARTONS
Examples:
- Soy, Rice, Soup
- Egg Beaters
Note: Must be rinsed.
8 - TETRA PAKS (FOIL-LINED)
Examples:
Note: Must be rinsed.
9 - "JUICE" GABLE TOP CARTONS/TETRA PAKS
Note: Must be rinsed.
10 - FOIL-LINED BAGS
Bags that are inner-lined with foil, for example, "Starbucks" , "Nabob" , "Maxwell House" , & "Kicking Horse". You may also include foil-lined chip bags & candy wrappers.
Note: These bags MUST be rinsed.
11 - POLYSTYRENE FOAM CUPS/CONTAINERS
Meat trays, egg cartons, cups, take-out food clam shell containers, etc.
Note: All These containers MUST be washed thoroughly.
12 - ELECTRONICS
See pick-up fees or depot fees for list of electronics accepted.
Hints: Please remove all metal parts,pumps from plastics. Whenever possible reuse plastics & reduce packaging; squash big bottles & stack tubs. |
